The Story of Survivor 2.0
We opened in August 2020 because of the pandemic. The founder, Rebecca Lohman, knew that cancer patients would not feel comfortable going back to the bigger gym to protect their health. As a result, Club Hope Fitness was created with the heart of the Club being Survivor 2.0.
As the program has built over the past few years, it has become a supportive community to survivors throughout the Wichita area. Cancer can be a very lonely disease, only those who have experienced it can truly understand. Survivor 2.0 provides a safe space and community where all can feel connection, support, and the realization that their experience is “normal” for someone facing cancer. Once you walk
in the doors of Club Hope – the doors will always be open. There is no ending to our support – survivorship is a lifelong journey, and we are here for you.
Our first group – the originals – began in March of 2021 – 10 brave souls believing in a program that had yet to be proved. Since the beginning we have helped nearly 200 cancer survivors and their families. We have helped survivors from day 2 of diagnosis to 50 years surviving.
We offer group programs, group training, personal training, yoga, wellness programs and retreats. All our introductory programs are offered at no cost. Finances will never get in the way of a survivor’s health. We work with wellness programs throughout the city to connect our survivors with complementary modalities to help deal with the side effects
of their diagnosis.
We also offer groups and support to those who are caregiving for loved ones and those who have lost a loved one to cancer.
At Survivor 2.0 we help a survivor not just survive but THRIVE beyond a cancer diagnosis.
The Inspiration Behind Survivor 2.0
as Told by Founder Rebecca Lohman on Opening Day
“I have heard the saying that one person can change the world – I truly believe that. And while that is the saying, two people changed my world and inspired Survivor 2.0. Two people fighting a diagnosis of cancer they knew they could not win, but never giving up..
Paul – I met Paul 18 months before he lost his battle. He was a 51-year-old single dad fighting Advanced Colon Cancer. I never knew Paul before chemotherapy. Every day he was either having chemotherapy, recovering from chemotherapy, or dealing with the side effects – but that did not stop him from living, laughing, being the ornery one, and loving his children through every moment of it. He lit up the room and could create such laughter even on days when you thought you could not find your smile.
Gwen – I met Gwen 18 months ago. My Gwenny – my ROCKSTAR. The first time I meet her she told me, “They tell me I have less than a year to live, but I am tired of being in the basement depressed and with absolutely no muscle mass. The next day, she started working out with me and in no time, she was ready to challenge me, the trainer, in regard to her strength and endurance. She was a powerhouse. Gwen went on hospice in March 2020 and still today continues her fight.
The one thing they both have in common – THEY CHALLENGED ME TO DO MORE – to be better than I was. To use the gifts that God has given me to touch even more lives and to offer programming that is the best it can possibly be for ALL cancer survivors. Programs that do not have an ending, just beginnings of a new phase of support.
Paul was a gardener who loved to plant and watch things grow. While he is not here with us here at Club Hope, this is just one of the seeds he planted while he was alive. And while Gwen has not been strong enough to walk in those doors, she has watched us every step of the way through posts, video chats and numerous conversations.”
